It just seem a little crazy that I don’t give up any opportunity for night photography. Like this evening, I was at Alice Lake camping and even when my friend are heading to the bathroom on this dark night, I still carry my camera with me and took this by the bathroom. It wasn’t really the bathroom that caught my attentions. It was more of the shadows that caught my eyes!! On the technicial side, this was blended with 6 different exposure shots to keep the lights not overexposed!
It was a great night shooting out on this dark night. Fun to get down to the water out in the dark. The starry night sky is just as beautiful without the milky way!
Green lights glow above est Vancouver from the recent aurora borealis display taken from Spanish Banks, Vancouver, British Columbia
The beautiful milky way connected with the waterfalls on earth! Unfortunately, it is a man-made connection because it is a composite image from 2 different shots taken from different time and different locations. After my first visit to this waterfalls knowing the direction will never meet the milky way galactic core, I decided to use one of my old milky way shot and try a composite with these crazy treeline. And quite happy with it! Although it is not actually taken at the spot, I’m quite happy with the result! And I hope you enjoy it!
Smokey night sky along the Icefields Parkway in the Canadian Rockies. This time was at the Stutfield viewpoint right before moonset behind the glacier in Stutfield Peak. Hope you enjoy it and have a great night
Lake Minnewanka Night Pano
Whytecliff Park at night with milky way above going into the Pacific Ocean. Love the curvy shoreline extend all the way to that little island in the middle. And if you look for it on google map, it’s called the ‘Whyte Islet Park’! And interestingly that is part of Bowen Island and not West Vancouver. Well…. sorry it gets superlocal with all these geo locations.
Another night out at Porteau Cove Provincial Park by the pier shooting milky way. First try of the Canon 50mm L lens for some astrophotography. It was capture for 8 sec at f/1.4 ISO2500. There are quite a bit of distortion at the corner. Other than that, it is pretty sharpe even at f/1.4. Hope you enjoy it and have a great day!
Panorama shot of Shek O beach on the southeast side of Hong Kong island. A windy evening in the beginning of Feburary. The lights from the beach illuminated the bay nicely with milky way in the background
My buddy and I went to Squamish last week exploring some forest service road trying to find some dark night sky. We went all the way to the top of the road and find out there isn’t much of a view up there. But lucky enough we did managed to find a good spot with this silhouette of this mountain top with the galactic core of the milky way right above it. This was taken with a 50mm lens, f/2.0, 15sec. And it is still too long and getting a bit of a trail. Well… it is more noticeable when looking at the hi-rise version! Hope you enjoy it and have a great weekend!!
Milky way above Grand Canyon. It is a composite as there is no way to capture the massive canyon on a moonless night. So the foreground is actually taken before dawn where there are enough light to have a long exposure shot of the majestic Grand Canyon, and at the same time dark enough so that the canyon fade into darkness in distance. Hope you enjoy it and have a great night!
A great night capturing some astro lapse sequence at the Tangle Ridge viewpoint along the Icefield Parkway. This was digital blended with 2 different exposure. One for the foreground and the other for the background. Hope you enjoy it!
Windy night with clouds drifting across the dark sky.
A month ago firends of mine was visiting from Shanghai and we went to Porteau Cove one night hoping to see a starry dark night sky. When we arrived, the sky was completely coverd with clouds. It was a little dissapointed at the time, but after we waited there for about an hour with freezing cold wind chill. The sky finally clearing up and this is the moment of that 50/50 situation. It was worth the wait in the cold for sure! Would you do that?
A night hiking in the dark in the beach passing through this forest. It was great that I have a habbit of turning off my headlamp once in a while to checking out what the night sky was looking like. Otherwise, I sould have missed this beautiful treeline view against the dar night sky! Hope you enjoy and have a great night!
Glow In The Water
It was a aurora active night last night with a Geomagnetic Activity level of 5 Kp. A good reason to head out hoping to capture some colorful night sky. As I was driving up north on Sea-to-Sky highway still thinking where I should go. And as usual Porteau Cove is a great stop just to see if there are any color going on in the sky. Get off the car and not to mention of the color, it was hardly see just a few stars because it was so cloudy. Waited for an hour as the sky started to clearing up, but there are still no color showing. Wandered around in the park for another half hour and see the tide and getting lower. So I changed my shoes and decided to head down to the water for some dark sky water shot. Hope you enjoy!
It’s going to be a while until the next time I can enjoy a quiet, calm nigiht like this as I’ll be in Shanghai very soon. And with all the light pollution there, I don’t know when and where I’ll be able to see a starry night skies next… In the mean time, I hope you enjoy this last one from Whytecliff Park, West Vancouver, BC. Have a great night!
It has been many Aurora activity lately, but we still kept getting the usual weather of rain and cloudy in Vancouver. Without any luck to get out for some night sky beauty. I have to stay home digging through some of my old photos. Come across this panorama I missed from May 2016. One of the best Aurora night I had over the years. It was just right in Whistler, British Columbia. Hopefully to have some clear sky with some colorful night beauty again soon! Hope you enjoy this and have a great night!
Milky way above Shek O on the southeast side of Hong Kong Island
A night chasing milky way in Upper Squamish Valley. My friends and I was exploring the back road in Squamish Valley and was very surprised that there are so many people stargazing at night while we were there. Also heading off east on the road hopefully all fire will be gone soon and looking forwards to some falls color!!
Path To Eternity
Smokey Sky in Jasper National Park right before mooset. The moon was tinted in orange with the smoke in the atmosphere. I was on my way back to Canmore andstill have a long way to go after all day of traveling back and forth. Even though I was really looking forward to my bed in Canmore. I just can’t help myself stopping for the beautiful moonset and its reflection for a few shots
Awesome show of aurora borealis glow the other night. I drove 2 hours north to visit few lakes up in Whistler. This on is a panorama shot take at Lost Lake. Aurora reflected in the lake with milky way arc going from north to the south end (left to right). It was a wonderful night for astrophotography!
It’s always hard to aviod stopping at Green Lake when heading up whistler for night shoot. And there’re no exception on this evening after shooting aurora at Alta Lake. The galactic centre of the milky way was just above the horizon around this time of the night.
Single exposure shot of the pier at Porteau Cove. Although it is a place I shoot a lot at night time, but as the season change, locations of the night sky are different. The milky way were right behind the mountain on this night! How do you like it against the pier?
Milky way above Mount Rainier. Mount Rainier is the highest mountain in Washington State, USA. It is a large active volcano in the Cascade Range of the Pacific Northwest. Hope you enjoy and have a good night!
A smokey night at Vermilion Lake back in August. Layer of smoke tinted in golden color with the lights from Banff under Mount Rundle. hope you enjoy!
So good to have the milky way season back. Well… it was back for a while, but the weather conditions hasn’t been very good for taking astro photography. And last night was a great night fior that in a very long time. Get to this location right around sunset time and setup some time lapse. Stay up til’ around 3:00am and shot a total of 5 time lapse sequence with 2 cameras. And just to found out one of the CF card have some problem causing 2 of the time lapse sequence straight into the trash…. Oh well… at least I stall got a few of the frames from that and this is a frame from one of the sequence… Hope you enjoy it and have a great night!
Milky way above Anvil island and some green airglow on the right. A beautiful night at Porteau Cove. Have a great night!
A Peaceful morning at Waterton Lakes National Park in Alberta, Canada. The sky starting to get brighter as the stars fading away. A layer of fog covering half of the mountain and coming in and out through out this morning. I was lucky enough to capture some great time lapse with the fog movement.
Galactic, Dream, Emerald
Milky way above Tantalus Lookout point on Sea To Sky Highway. Spent a evening exploring Squamish Valley and made this last stop before heading back to Vancouver. It was a great night chasing milky way! Hope you enjoy and have a great night!
Night of the Eclipse
Twilight at Upper Joffre Lake Provincial Park, BC, Canada. A 6 images combined panorama. Hope you enjoy it!

Great night at Waterfowl Lake doing my thing capturing the beautiful night sky. And that’s the other camera capturing some timelapse on this starry night!
Great night out by the dock at Rainbow Park in Whistler with gorgeous light show. Have a great night!
A closer look intot he dark night sky! 😉
There was a star party last night at Porteau Cove Provincial Park. It was fun to see so many people were out under the dark night sky!
Crescent moon setting behind me hitting the mountain with lights and shades. It was great to have such conditions as it can captures the starry night sky and good lighting on the mountain range. Hope you enjoy and have a good night
River of the night sky against the mountain top in Squamish, BC
Another starry night at Porteau Cove walking along the shore. As you can see it was a low tide night providing was more opportunity for photographying the night sky. Have a great night!
Night view of the lovely town of Banff. Taken back in August when all the smoke from the forest fire are still surrounding half of British Columbia. I was trying to find a higher spot hoping there will be less hazy. Altough the smoke are covering part of the town, but I was quite happy to see half of the night sky are clear! Hope you enjoy!
Over The Top
It was a cold night at Porteau Cove Provincial Park with some strong wind on this evening. This tower by the pier make a good subject against the dark night sky. You can see my buddy on the second level taking some shots from up there! Have a great night!
Giant Organic Train
Milky way above Waterton Lake. The bright light from the right is Prince Of Wales Hotel. Have a great day!
Milky Way above Roche Lake in Roche Lake Provincial Park
It is recommended to watch the aurora borealis under a clear sky. In this case, the clouds above lit by the city lights from below. Making it more dramtic with the green glow, what do you think?
A composite shot taken from a grapes field in Osoyoos, British Columbia with milky way above. Hope you enjoy!
Milky way above Howe Sound Inlet near Anvil Island. Solar Eclipse just over and getting ready to head out for another night exploration!! Did you get a chance to watch the solar eclipse?
Taken a week ago on the Icefield Parkway at Waterfowl Lake. Hopefully the rain will stop the fire soon…
A composite shot taken on a forest service road in Squammish, British Columbia. Hope you enjoy it and have a great day!
Milky way above Pacific Ocean taken at Whytecliff Park, West Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada
Panoramic of mountain lookout point in Harrison Mills. The milky way arc going from the left towards north to the right of the galactic center of the milky way to the southwest direction. I did took few more shots on the right of this panorama shot, but it was too much light pollution to be include in this panorama. So this results were total use of 8 portrait oriented shots combined together. Hope you enjoy it and have a great night!!
Another great night at Moraine Lake shooting for quite a while. This was taken earlier that night before clouds filling up the sky. Digital blended with 3 shots on this one. One for the background, another on the foreground, plus a focus blend on the big bold rock you are looking at. Have a wonderful night!
Most of the time road are related to motion. Especally at night, people are normally in a hurry trying to get to their destination. After years of doing night photography, I learn to stop and enjoy the night even in the middle of the road. Are you in a hurry?
Shoreline of Porteau Cove on a low tide starry night.
It was a night out chasing aurora, didn’t have any luck on that. But it was still a great night out shooting under the starry night sky. And happy to have a shot of my new wheels! Have a great day!!
A composite shot of Painted Hills under the milky way
Vermilion Lakes in Banff, Alberta before moonset.
A little window at the starry night sky through the little space in between trees. Lights from a little house nearby lit up the trees from below. Hope you enjoy!
The Boat House
Night stop by the pier at Porteau Cove near Squamish, British Columbia
It’s been a few months since I last get out for some long exposure actions under the beautiful night sky. Mainly because I lost my lovely compact red rider on a road trip to Alberta. Sad story… But it’s history means I got new wheel!s now, WooHoo!!! This was taken 3 nights ago on at one of my usual stops along the sea-to-sky highway. It was after moonset with low tide. Perfect to have a walk along the shore. Although it wasn’t the milkyway season at the time to see the galactic center. You can still see the north ends of the star river in the sky!! Hope you enjoy it and Have a great night!
A wonderful weekend over the Canada Day weekend staying at my buddy new home on the island. It was great to have the dark night sky right in the backyard!!
A night visit to the Upper Kananaskis Lake in Alberta, Canada. Taken back in August where all the smoke from the forest fire were still covering this area…
Spent a good few hours shooting at Waterfowl Lakes along the Icefield Parkway last June. Think it is about time to hit the road again for some night sky action!!!
It was the last few nights of the meteor shower and was out to Porteau Cove having some great time shooting and night panic under the dark night sky. And the aurora was out later that night giving us some bonus lights by the end of the night!!
A complete sky view on a dark night back in July out in Squamish chasing milky way! Hope you enjoy and have a great night
Monument Night Sky
Geraldine Peak from a distance on a beautiful night near Jasper. This place should be filled with snow by now and not accessible by vehicles. I hope you enjoy it. Have a great night!
Night sky above the Pacicfic Ocean taken along the Sea To Sky highway in British Columbia
Panoramic view of the milky way connected the sea to the sky. No wonder they called this highway the Sea To Sky highway (connecting Vancouver to Squamish). I believe many have seen this sea to sky view during the day. But have you seen the view there at night?
Zion Valley Startrails
A night exploring Garry Point Park on a freezing cold night. It’s been raining for few days and my buddy call for a night shoot right when the rain stop…. well… kind of stopped. We head down to the park and it was a great dramatic overcast sky without moon. It was dark by stay away from the street lights. But also have them lit up the wood nicely from a distance. I found this nicely positioned tree rrot by the beach when I explored the park before during the day knowing where to find it. Otherwise it would be a difficult task just to find it in the dark. Hope you enjoy and have a great night!
Porteau Cove on a low tide starry night. It’s been a while seen I last seen a starry night sky. Exploring on this low tide night wandering around the coastline.
