Sunrise Glory

A lovely morning at Upper Kananaskis Lake waiting for sunrise. After a long night shoot at the lower lake and then headed to the upper lake quietly waiting. It was a very peaceful morning!

Star Painting

Milky way above treeline with a bright star shine on the lake surface as wind blowing strong this evening. The waves on the lake moving quickly causing the wiggly lines with the long exposure! Not a usual capture on the lake surface…!
Have a great evening!

Frozen Chaos

Ever since my first time visited this waterfalls, I’ve been thinking it will be very cool to shoot it when there are snow covering it or maybe even under the starry night sky. Last year, I visited it in deep Winter and the waterfalls was completely frozen. So I made my trip this October and try again. The scene was lovely and refreshing. But it was quite a journey…

First, have to snowshoe on a rocky with light snow section uphill. And that put a lot of scratches on it… Distance wasn’t long at all, for just few hundred meters. But need be very careful with on each step trying not to destroy the fresh snow where I have to set my composition. And I have to say it wasn’t easy to find a composition out of this chaotic beauty. And not to mention that with a 14mm lens on my camera, I’ll have to stand right inside the water to frame the shot. I was pretty excited that I finally gave a try to this scene and was taking the shot that was in my head for a very long time. It was great until step in about half a feet of water and started feeling my boots is leaking from the back of my left foot… And decided to get out of the water and head back down. Also won’t be making any plan to come back at night. At least not the upper part of this waterfalls!

Chasing the Sky

Whenever I travel to chase the dark sky, always try to capture some different image on the same night. But it is tricky and not easy to travel to multiple locations on the same night as it’s often not a very long period of time to shoot the center of the milky way. Also it will be very hard to find and frame your shot under the dark sky. So some preparation will always helps!

Are you interested in chasing the night sky and take photo of the night sky like these? If so, I will be holding 2 workshops next August in Banff / Jasper National Park on Landscape / Waterscapes and Nightscapes Photography!

Close Up NEOWISE

Another shot taken from the NEOWISE Comet chasing week back in August. Although it was still in August, the temperature was a little cold as it was in a higher elevation in the Canadian Rockies.

First Location

A panorama combined with 8 portrait oriented images. A popular viewpoint along the Icefields Parkway near Jasper, Alberta. This might not be the best view to take photo of these mountain range. But it is a very memorable location to me because I took my very first nightscapes photo in the Canadian Rockies and also my very first solo trip to the Rockies. Before that, was my first time visiting the Rockies on a bus tour with family about 20 years ago…

Hope you enjoy this new panorama from this good old spot!

Around The Sign

I have started a new habit of changing lens during shooting at night. Particularly when shooting the milky way. Also started to use a large aperture f/1.4 50mm lens to shoot (one of my first lens from when I have my first 7D. There are some issues when shooting with this lens, especially with “Astigmatism” being quite horrifying in the corner… It happened when you wide open your lens. Like the 2 examples below are shot at f/1.8 and 2.0

And to switch to a 20mm lens to included the sign of Banff National Park.

Some times, you go for any kind of foreground even if it is just saw a sign while you were driving!! Well…. I saw it on an afternoon and decided to go back on a clear night as it was just a stop on the way! And you can get to shot at 2 park!! 😀

You can sign up for my 2021 Nightscapes Photography Workshop if you are looking into learning how to photography the beautiful sky at night like these. Check out the link here!
